Cut The Clutter
If you’re using a wireless mouse or keyboard it probably came with a teeny-tiny USB “receiver” (or, if you want a chuckle, a “dongle”), and if that device was from Logitech it probably came with one of their “Unifying” receivers and supports multiple devices at once (so you only need the one receiver plugged in for both your keyboard and mouse, etc).
This is actually pretty convenient and means you can use the same receiver for your mouse at home or at work if you bring your laptop home with you. Logitech even makes wireless headsets, for example, and they can all be connected to the same receiver to really keep down the clutter.
Well, just to keep things exciting, Logitech has a newer receiver type for some of its higher-end devices now too.
The newer receiver standard is called “Bolt” and serves the same purpose, letting you connect one or more wireless devices to a single receiver. The new receiver type is basically low-power Bluetooth 5.0 and that makes it less vulnerable to interference, and even improves privacy, but they are not compatible with the older “Unifying” receivers and have a different logo on the box. So, if you have both types of devices you will need at least one receiver for each type.
The moral of the story is: if you are considering a new wireless keyboard or mouse from Logitech and you want to keep the number of extra plugs down too, be sure to check the logo on the box! You may want to stick to one type or the other, in order to keep down the clutter. Or, check with us — we’re here to help! 🙂
