Gallium Nitride?
Gallium Nitride.
Whether you’re looking for something small that can charge all of your devices, or just want to replace the bulky, underpowered, or worn-out charger that came with your phone or USB-C laptop, you definitely want to look for something based on Gallium Nitride.
Why? The short version: Gallium Nitride (GaN) can deliver more power.
The longer version: GaN is a semiconductor, like Silicon, but with a bigger “band gap” (the amount of energy required to “kick” an electron “up a notch”) compared to the more familiar Silicon. That bigger band gap means, in part, that GaN-based power devices can handle higher voltages better, leading to higher efficiencies and the net effect is that GaN chargers can be smaller, faster, and quite literally “cooler” than their less efficient and lower-wattage Silicon-based alternatives.
A company called Hyper makes some nice ones:
- HyperJuice 100W GaN Compact Wall Charger 2x USB-C (100w PD3.0) + 2x USB-A (18w QC3.0) – White, 123.99 + tax
- HyperJuice 100W Stackable GaN Compact Wall Charger – 3x USB-C (100w PD3.0), 1x USB-A (18w QC3.0) 100W – Black, for 120.99 + tax
Comparing the cost of a new USB-C MacBook charger and the bulky sizes of lower-powered chargers, these compact charging stations offer a huge advantage in portability and reduced charging times!
